Crane ISD Statement on Immigration and Student Privacy
At Crane ISD, we are committed to ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for all students, regardless of immigration status. Below are important clarifications regarding our policies and procedures related to student information and interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Does CISD ask for information on families’ immigration status?
No. Crane ISD does not collect immigration documentation from students or families. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that undocumented children have the same right to attend public school as U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The immigration status of students or parents does not impact their right to education.
Will CISD coordinate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)?
Crane ISD is not responsible for enforcing federal immigration law. While we comply with all applicable state and federal laws, our policies ensure that student information remains protected.
CISD does not initiate contact with ICE to share student information.
We strictly adhere to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which safeguards student records.
Relevant district policies, such as Board Policy FL (Local) regarding student records and Board Policy GRA (Local) regarding law enforcement coordination, can be accessed here: CISD Board Policies.
Will CISD share student records with ICE?
Under FERPA, student education records and personally identifiable information cannot be released without:
Written parent consent
A valid subpoena or court order
A serious and legitimate health or safety threat (e.g., child abuse investigations, contagious disease reports)
Directory Information may be released if parents have not opted out. Crane ISD designates the following as directory information:
Student name, address, phone number, and email
Photograph, date of birth, and major field of study
Degrees, honors, and awards received
Dates of attendance, grade level, and most recent school attended
Participation in activities/sports, including weight/height for athletic teams
Will CISD allow ICE to enter district facilities?
CISD follows Board Policy GRA, which outlines our process when any law enforcement agency requests to question or take custody of a student:
The principal will verify the identity of the officer and the reason for questioning.
The principal will make reasonable efforts to notify parents, unless there is a valid legal reason not to do so.
A school official will be present during questioning unless the officer objects.
If a student is taken into custody, the principal will notify the Superintendent and typically the parent, unless legally prohibited.
Crane ISD remains committed to protecting the rights, privacy, and safety of all students. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact your child's campus.
